Inheritance: Predictable ‘Parasite’ meets ‘Succession’

Lily Collins stars as a grieving daughter in a poorly crafted film.

A little under a month ago, I watched Inheritance starring Lily Collins, Simon Pegg and Chance Crawford. The film follows the tragic loss in the Monroe family, the father. Lauren (Collins) is left with nothing but a mystery to solve about the man (Pegg) kept underneath the grounds beside their lavish home. In the midst of all the unwanted drama the father has left for Lauren, she has to support her brother (Crawford) in an upcoming election, attend court meetings and attend her daughter’s school recitals.

Honestly, this would’ve been a great mini series. Diving into her personal issues more and slowly unraviling the truths about her family.

Review

The concept and story is good however (particularly in the beginning) there was a lot of breaks, pauses and little to no dialogue when the movie couldve moved faster. Therefore, showed me that they were eating up time and trying to add dramatic flare to the grief. But like, we didn’t need to do that. As an audience member, we already know so little about the characters and story, The beginning is the most critical in establishing the audiences trust and grasp of the charcters especially the protagonist and antagonist.y just lauren finding proof and evidence about this guy locked up, and even then she failed. personally i didnt see the point of all the running around when all she had to do was wait for a phone call about the fingerprints as the only source she had was the guy locked up.

My Final Comments

It was unnecessary to portray Lauren as a lawyer. She was not very good at dealing with her findings as someone who should be considering her profession.

Also, the husband/daughter plot, brother’s election and father’s close friend couldv’e been explored a lot more in depth or left out entirely.

I also guessed pretty early on that “Morgan” is Lauren’s father.
1. Lauren and her brother do not look alike whatsover. (i thought that might’ve been the casting directors mishap)
2. Her “father” left her with only a million dollars and their relationship was not the best, like ever.
3. Morgan knew everything about her. If I would imagine, a father wouldn’t tell a guy locked in a bunker about his daughter. I couldn’t (and would not liuke to) imagine that as a topic of interest. So therefore, there was really only one reason for it.

Anyways, wasn’t my most favourtie watch, especially when you are shaking your head at the poor execution and missed opurtunities. Check out my rating (out of five) on my Letterboxd or check it out on the Maria Film Club Instagram. Catch you guys in the next post and as always thank you for reading.

Yours Truly, Maria.
