Dubai Fashion Week (DFW) has rapidly positioned itself as a prominent fixture in the global fashion calendar, bringing attention to the rich cultural and contemporary design elements from the Middle East. Co-founded by the Dubai Design District (d3) and the Arab Fashion Council (AFC), DFW has grown in significance since its inception, showcasing not only local talent but also global fashion icons. It has become an influential platform for Middle Eastern designers to present their collections on an international stage, fostering creativity and innovation while celebrating the unique narratives of the region.
One of the primary forces behind DFW’s success is the Arab Fashion Council. This organisation has worked tirelessly to elevate the profiles of Middle Eastern designers, giving them the visibility they deserve on a global scale. Through their efforts, DFW has attracted international attention, with global figures such as Iris van Herpen, Jean Paul Gaultier, and Carolina Herrera gracing the event over the years. This convergence of Eastern and Western fashion icons has helped establish Dubai as a key player in bridging cultural divides through fashion.
This year, I was particularly looking forward to attending Dubai Fashion Week to see the works of both emerging and established designers. The opportunity to see fresh talent, particularly from the Arab world, was something I greatly anticipated. The focus on showcasing Middle Eastern designers at DFW is crucial in ensuring that this creative hub continues to flourish and gain recognition. I’m especially excited to see how this platform evolves, hoping it can offer even more space for Arab designers to take centre stage in the future, further cementing DFW’s place in the global fashion conversation.
A core element of DFW’s appeal is its storytelling approach. Designers have used their collections to reflect pressing social issues, from gender equality to environmental concerns. The fashion shows transcend mere clothing presentations; they become artistic statements, imbued with meaning and emotion. This year’s events were no different, with sustainability being a common thread in many collections, as well as themes that champion cultural heritage and futuristic visions. The merging of traditional influences with modern ideas creates an enriching experience for both designers and audiences alike.
The creative elements of the shows are another highlight of DFW. The fashion presentations are often treated as full-scale productions, with set design, lighting, and music coming together to create an immersive atmosphere. These productions are similar to film sets in their level of detail and drama, making each show a unique spectacle. Such efforts only amplify the emotional impact of the designs and add a layer of depth to the storytelling.
One example that stood out to me this year was VIVA VOX’s collection. Even though I couldn’t attend in person, the impact of the show was undeniable. The collection was a visually striking combination of avant-garde elements and wearable fashion, featuring bold prints and vibrant colours. VIVA VOX’s innovative approach to fashion consistently pushes the boundaries of creativity, and this year’s collection was no different. The use of graphic prints, unconventional silhouettes, and statement accessories showcased individuality, adding to the dynamism of the event.
Similarly, ALIA BASTAMAM’s show was another highlight. Known for her dedication to crafting pieces that celebrate bold femininity, her latest collection embraced structured silhouettes alongside flowing fabrics. Each piece was meticulously crafted, reflecting strength and confidence, which was reinforced by her fearless use of vibrant colours. The collection was not only beautiful but empowering, as it aimed to make the wearer feel both confident and powerful. The immersive set design and lighting complemented the show perfectly, adding another layer to the experience.
DEME BY GABRIELLA’s collection was a testament to the rising trend of sustainable fashion, which has been gaining prominence globally and in the Middle East. Gabriella’s show stood out for its use of eco-friendly materials, blending luxury with sustainability. The contrast of soft pastels and bold hues in the collection created an emotional depth that reflected renewal and transformation. This focus on sustainability was inspiring, as it showed how DFW can be at the forefront of setting global trends that extend beyond aesthetics.
Colour choices across the board were another notable feature of this year’s fashion week. Designers favoured a mix of earthy tones, vibrant hues, and metallics, reflecting both the natural beauty of the region and broader global fashion trends. Browns, royal blues, pastels, and shimmering fabrics dominated the runways, and these colours are likely to influence global fashion in the coming months.
Dubai Fashion Week has cemented itself as a key player in the global fashion industry, not only for its glamorous shows but also for its emphasis on cultural narratives, storytelling, and innovation. The efforts of the Arab Fashion Council and Dubai Design District have been instrumental in this journey, elevating regional designers while creating a global platform for them to shine. For me, attending DFW has been an incredible opportunity to witness the evolution of fashion in the Middle East, and I eagerly look forward to seeing how it continues to grow—especially with more Arab designers leading the charge in future seasons. As the global fashion industry embraces inclusivity and diversity, DFW stands at the forefront, championing these values and ensuring that the Middle East has its rightful place on the world stage.
